One Author New Canaan

During the month of March, New Canaan Library celebrates “One Author New Canaan” and the literary works of award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson with programming that supports and honors themes found throughout her work.    

All Program Locations are Online.

Write (or Draw!) a Feeling Workshop for Ages 4-7 Years March 10 @ 4:30 pm - 5:15 pm

How can we use writing and drawing to show the world how we feel? Children ages 4-7 years and their families, join Librarian Rebecca on Zoom to explore Jacqueline Woodson’s picture book The Day You Begin and to write or draw an emotionally resonant message of your own.

During the session, we will look closely at a few examples from The Day You Begin. Families may wish to check out the book and read it in advance of the workshop.

This program is only intended for families with children ages 4-7 years.

Before the Ever After Book Discussion March 18 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join Katherine Snedaker, LCSW, Founder and Executive Director of PINK Concussions,  international speaker, brain injury professional, researcher, and mother with personal experience of brain injury within her family. We will explore what a concussion is, how it affects family, friends and how to move forward.

We will be using Jacqueline Woodson’s book Before the Ever After to explore themes of family, friendship, support systems and unconditional love.

This is a family discussion best suited for children/teens grades 4+ and their caregivers.

This program is in partnership with New Canaan CARES and New Canaan Library. New Canaan CARES is an independent, non-profit community organization whose purpose is to advance the health and well-being of youth and families.

This program is inspired by the community-spiritedness that we find throughout Ms. Woodson’s books.

Young Critics Book Group for Grades 4-6 March 23 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Young Critics are reading Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson this month. Join Librarian Rebecca Fox in a Zoom meeting to discuss the book and chat with your friends! This program is for any children who are in 4th-6th grades.

Little Bookworms: Book Group for Grades K-1 March 17 @ 4:00 pm - 4:45 pm

Welcome to Little Bookworms, our book group for children in kindergarten and 1st grade! This month, we will read This Is the Rope by Jacqueline Woodson together in class. Join Miss Rebecca to explore the book and do hands-on activities to enhance your learning.

Pick up a packet, which contains fun materials to do after the program. Pickup instructions will be emailed after you register. Let’s plan on spending about 45 minutes together as we get into this fun cumulative story.

Love of Literacy for Ages 4-6 March 23 @ 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Welcome to Love of Literacy! This month’s story, which will be read in class, is Pecan Pie Baby by Jacqueline Woodson. Join Educator Debbie Moran as your child learns early literacy skills to prepare for reading!

Pick up your early literacy packet, which contains fun materials to do before and after the program. Pick up instructions will be emailed after you sign-up. Let’s plan on spending about 30 minutes together as we get into this fun seasonal story.

Debbie Moran is a Master Early Childhood Education Consultant, advising on, creating and promoting academic programs and curriculum. She has nearly thirty years of teaching experience, beginning in the New York City public school system, and most recently teaching for fourteen years at a private school in New Canaan, CT. Ms. Moran earned her master’s degree at New York University, and her bachelor’s degree at Trinity College in Washington DC.

This program is intended for families with children only.
